There are no statistics available when it comes to this particular form of OCD. That said, I have met quite a few people electronically to gauge a few interesting things about this OCD theme. I know one woman who has been haunted by a false memory for more than four years.

It all started a night that involved drinking more than four years ago. Some time not far past that day, she got a thought that she might have done something bad. She is loathe to talk about it. She cannot bring herself to speak of what the memory is about.

All she can say is that it is bad, that it is the worst thing she could ever do. Not a day goes by that this woman is not hounded by her memory. It has expanded over time, with more detail being added.

So far, for at least two years, I and my compatriots on an online forum have been unable to convince this woman that her memory is not true and that she can recover from it if she just took a leap of faith that she is really dealing with OCD and not a true memory.

It is daunting and disappointing. That leads to a tremendous amount of ruminating and reassurance seeking. That leads to more compulsions and round and round the sufferer goes. Reassurance seeking is common with this theme.

Typically a sufferer will question anyone who was around during the time the memory speaks of, trying to determine if anyone remembers the sufferer doing something wrong or bad. Sufferers have gone so far as to ask staff at a bar for videotape from the night in question to help determine if the sufferer did something bad.

Of course, the reassurance seeking does not work. I went back and forth with another woman recently who was convinced she did something bad to someone in her own home. As far as I know, there was no drinking involved. Reassurance seeking led her to ask two people who were at home whether anything bad happened and they confirmed that the sufferer was no where near the supposed victim, that she was on another floor of the house.

Still another time, I met a man online who became convinced that he had killed someone at a bar and thrown the body into a nearby river. A compulsion this man did, which is a type of reassurance seeking, was to scan TV and print media, looking for stories of a body being found in or near the river.

Even though there was no evidence that the man did anything, he became convinced that he had killed someone.Obsessive—compulsive disorder OCD is a mental disorder in which a person feels the need to perform certain routines repeatedly called "compulsions"or has certain thoughts repeatedly called "obsessions".

The cause is unknown. Treatment involves counselingsuch as cognitive behavioral therapy CBTand sometimes antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs or clomipramine. Obsessive—compulsive disorder affects about 2. OCD can present with a wide variety of symptoms. Certain groups of symptoms usually occur together. These groups are sometimes viewed as dimensions or clusters that may reflect an underlying process.

These symptoms fit into three to five groupings. The observed groups included a "symmetry factor", a "forbidden thoughts factor", a "cleaning factor", and a "hoarding factor".

The "symmetry factor" correlated highly with obsessions related to ordering, counting, and symmetry, as well as repeating compulsions.

The "forbidden thoughts factor" correlated highly with intrusive and distressing thoughts of a violent, religious, or sexual nature. The "cleaning factor" correlated highly with obsessions about contamination and compulsions related to cleaning. The "hoarding factor" only involved hoarding-related obsessions and compulsions, and was identified as being distinct from other symptom groupings. While OCD has been considered a homogeneous disorder from a neuropsychological perspective, many of the putative neuropsychological deficits may be due to comorbid disorders.

Furthermore, some subtypes have been associated with improvement in performance on certain tasks such as pattern recognition washing subtype and spatial working memory obsessive thought subtype. Subgroups have also been distinguished by neuroimaging findings and treatment response. Neuroimaging studies on this have been too few, and the subtypes examined have differed too much to draw any conclusions.

On the other hand, subtype dependent treatment response has been studied, and the hoarding subtype has consistently responded least to treatment. Obsessions are thoughts that recur and persist, despite efforts to ignore or confront them. Within and among individuals, the initial obsessions, or intrusive thoughts, vary in their clarity and vividness.

A relatively vague obsession could involve a general sense of disarray or tension accompanied by a belief that life cannot proceed as normal while the imbalance remains. A more intense obsession could be a preoccupation with the thought or image of someone close to them dying [14] [15] or intrusions related to " relationship rightness ".

Other individuals with OCD may experience the sensation of invisible protrusions emanating from their bodies, or have the feeling that inanimate objects are ensouled. Some people with OCD experience sexual obsessions that may involve intrusive thoughts or images of "kissing, touching, fondling, oral sexanal sexintercourse, incestand rape " with "strangers, acquaintances, parents, children, family members, friends, coworkers, animals, and religious figures", and can include " heterosexual or homosexual content" with persons of any age.

For example, obsessive fears about sexual orientation can appear to the person with OCD, and even to those around them, as a crisis of sexual identity.

Most people with OCD understand that their notions do not correspond with reality; however, they feel that they must act as though their notions are correct. For example, an individual who engages in compulsive hoarding might be inclined to treat inorganic matter as if it had the sentience or rights of living organisms, while accepting that such behavior is irrational on a more intellectual level. There is a debate as to whether or not hoarding should be considered with other OCD symptoms.Delusions are beliefs that are not true.

Often these are beliefs that you hold despite considerable evidence to the contrary. Delusions are linked directly to psychosis, but not all delusions are that extreme.

In fact, anxiety commonly causes delusional thinking, simply because of what it's like to deal with anxiety.

Each person with anxiety experiences it in a unique way with a different makeup of symptoms and worries. People with anxiety who experience delusions also have a large variety of delusions. Delusions are most common in severe forms of anxiety but can be present in milder cases as well. When discussion delusions most people think of a paranoid delusion such as believing that the CIA is monitoring your home or that aliens have abducted your parents.

Those are paranoid delusions that often occur in mental health disorders that cause psychosis, and in these cases, the person will have lost touch with reality. Delusions related to anxiety are usually less intense and overall more benign. A few examples of common delusions in people diagnosed with anxiety disorders are:.

This is a very common delusion that occurs in people with anxiety. It seems to have the highest prevalence in people who have panic attacks but is found across all forms of anxiety disorders. A person with anxiety is likely to be hyper-aware of every sensation in their body—ones that most people would usually dismiss if they even noticed them. The person with anxiety, however, notices these symptoms and immediately think of the worst case scenario often jumping to serious medical conditions such as heart disease or lyme disease.

It is thought that the physical symptoms that cause the anxiety are actually the cause of this additional health anxiety and delusion. The physical symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks are nearly identical to many of the symptoms of serious health disorders which leads the person to believe their health is declining and in danger. While the doctor may inform you that you have no signs of disease and state you are in perfectly good health, you are unlikely to believe it.

Anxiety is Often the Cause of Delusions

Remember, a delusion is a false belief maintained despite evidence against it. For many with this delusion their physical symptoms of anxiety feel too real, cause too much fear, and cause too many symptoms to be something that isn't actually health related. The next common delusion is most often experienced by people with specific phobias but can be present in all forms of anxiety. For example someone with a specific phobia of birds may convince themselves that something about birds is dangerous - whether the birds will attack, or the birds carry disease, or some other fear, they convince themselves despite all available evidence that birds are to be feared and thus avoided at all costs.Nobody likes to feel guilt.

But when a fear of doing harm to others and feeling guilty as a result gets too severe, it can become pathological. Excessive fear of guilt can lead a person down the road to developing obsessive-compulsive disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder affects roughly 2 percent of the population. People with OCD get caught in a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts, performing ritualistic behaviors in an attempt to ease the distress.

These unwanted thoughts often revolve around a fear of losing control, harming others, being exposed to germs or contamination, or having inappropriate sexual desires.

Melli also suggests that fear of guilt is involved in OCD the way fear of fear is related to panic disorders. For the study, researchers first developed a new scale to measure guilt sensitivity. Then, adults were asked to complete the guilt sensitivity test and also fill out a questionnaire measuring their tendency to experience guilt and tests of OCD, anxiety and depression. The results suggest that guilt sensitivity is a distinctly different trait from being prone to guilt and is more closely linked to OCD symptoms than to depression or anxiety.

In a second experiment, 61 people with OCD and 47 with other anxiety disorders completed the new guilt sensitivity test as well as tests of anxiety and depression. Guilt sensitivity was especially high in individuals for whom ritualistic checking is a main OCD symptom.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is currently the most effective treatment for OCD. Melli suggests that therapists with patients who may have high guilt sensitivity should help them focus on strategies for challenging their feelings of excessive responsibility to others and cultivating a greater acceptance of guilt.
